Everyone oughta be worthy of it. But it never works out that way. What oughta be don' really happen. We oughta be never livin' boat life after all. But we all ended up there in the grinder. Ground all up. Aster and the other kids ain't deserved none of that.

And even if I did deserve it, I ain't want it. Pain and a grinder and all.

... You're right that you seldom get what you deserve, stuck there. And I don't think you've gotten it even before boarding the boat. But I think all of us take that as further reason to show kindness to you, and to each other.
